This is another in the beautiful series on California Style watercolor painters by Gordon McClelland. Post’s charming but sophisticated watercolors, mostly of San Francisco cityscapes and scenes of the working harbor, as well as local architecture, are known for their “simple, effective patterns” and “color harmonies of quiet beauty.” He was skilled at editing out huge quantities of extraneous detail in a scene, and at capturing the special mood of a scene, its essence, with a bold, clean, geometric design. His remarkable use of color and his technical virtuosity in this difficult medium were recognized by critics early on in his career: in 1937 a reviewer wrote of him as being “on the road to great art.” He was considered the equal of other great contemporaries such as Phil Dike and Rex Brandt, with whom he worked as a teacher, and interest in him is once again on the rise.
