Duncan Gleason (1881-1959) would have been well-known for any one of his many endeavors, but it is as an illustrator and painter of marine subjects that he has achieved the most fame. His dynamic images of sailing vessels of all sorts display a profound technical knowledge of both his craft and his subject, and are highly prized by collectors. Gleason was also a talented gymnast, historian, lecturer, and author of many books and articles on yachting and maritime history. His work in the movie industry included stints as a stuntman, a production artist, and a consultant on ship construction. He was honored by the Coast Guard for his volunteer services during World War II, which included patrolling Los Angeles Harbor in his yawl.
