Matthew Grayson
"Each flitch, each board, each plank can have only one ideal use."
~ George Nakashima
Post-War & Contemporary Design Specialist
Architecture, design, and art have long held a strong interest for Matthew Grayson, Moran’s Post-War and Contemporary Design Specialist. Growing up in Miami Beach, Matthew was riveted by the eclectic mix of influences landscaping the city; styles ranging from Mediterranean Revival, Art Deco, and Miami Modern (MIMO). In the decades since, Matthew has parlayed this early inspiration into diverse professional activities in the art and design field, gaining expertise with objects ranging from the traditional to modern. Above all, however, Matthew remains governed by his initial passion for 20th-century design, now a specialization.
At Moran’s, Matthew is responsible for curating two modern and contemporary design auctions per year in addition to his supporting role in several design and fine art auctions. He works closely with a network of clients and dealers, sourcing new auction property and assisting individuals with the consignment and acquisition process. Matthew regularly represents Moran’s at design industry events, fine art fairs, speaking engagements, and other occasions. As a member of the International Society of Appraisers (ISA), he utilizes his research and writing skills in the formation of USPAP compliance appraisal reports for insurance scheduling, estate tax filing, and legal purposes.
Matthew holds a BA in Communication Arts, Film, and Television Production from the University of Miami. Prior to his role at Moran’s, he worked in publishing, serving as the Art Editor at Detour Magazine, and later as an editorial art director and photo editor at Bauer Media Group. Matthew’s previous auction house experience includes a lead operations role at Everything But the House (EBTH), where he was responsible for marketing and curating estate auctions for a company operating in more than 20 cities throughout the United States. He also has a background in visual consulting, having founded a firm for home staging, collaborating with real estate brokers and estate sale agents. Finally, Matthew retains a studio practice as a multidisciplinary fine artist. He has shown in galleries in New York, Los Angeles, and South America.
Matthew has proven to be an essential part of the JMA team, by not only being a true expert in his field but also in his ability to develop lasting relationships with his clients.
