Los Angeles, CA— Summer’s almost here and people are upping their fashion game for all the parties, music festivals, vacations, and just day-to-day style! It’s the perfect time for Moran to present their Costume & Couture auction, taking place Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at 10am PST. This sale is over 400 lots and includes vintage and contemporary costume jewelry, handbags, accessories, and luggage and features designer brands such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, Valentino, Tom Ford, Balenciaga, Givenchy, Hermès, Judith Leiber, Miriam Haskell, Stephen Dweck, Michael Dawkins, John Hardy, and Georg Jensen.
Some of the favorite luggage pieces are a couple of vintage Louis Vuitton suitcases. One is a vintage Louis Vuitton Alzer 75 Damier suitcase with an estimate of $3,000-5,000. This hard-side suitcase was designed with Damier graphite canvas and silver brass hardware and has two trunk latches, a suede black interior, a fitted removable tray, and an attached luggage tag. The other is a vintage Louis Vuitton Bisten 55 Monogram suitcase estimated at $2,500-3,500. Also being a hard-side suitcase, this one features the classic brown and tan LV monogram coated canvas with natural Vachetta leather trim, branded brass hardware, a top handle, a buff canvas interior with branded tension straps and buckles.
For those that love vintage beauty there is a stunning 1937 Guerlain “Coque d’Or” perfume bottle and box by Jean-Michel Frank and Baccarat, valued at $3,000-5,000. The sanded oak box is designed by Jean-Michel Frank (1895-1941). It’s painted white with gilt lattice design and brass latch revealing a silk-lined interior containing a Baccarat partially gilt cobalt crystal glass bottle.
Jewelry collectors are sure to take notice of the sterling silver jewelry from Anette Kraen for Georg Jensen, circa 1980. This two-piece set, estimated $1,000-1,500, is comprised of a sterling silver and leather abstract collar necklace and matching bracelet.
One designer that performed especially well in Moran’s February Costume Jewelry, Coins & Luxury Accessories auction was Iradj Moini. This sale will offer a nice selection of Moini, the standout being a brooch designed with smokey and lemon quartz, faux pearl, branch coral, and carved turquoise stone petals further set with amethyst, pearl, and a Swarovski crystal. This beauty has an estimate of $800-1,200.
To complement the jewelry, this sale will offer over 50 lots of gorgeous handbags, purses, and clutches. Examples will include Bottega Veneta, Fendi, Valentino, Tom Ford, Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, Salvatore Ferragamo, Timmy Woods, Escada, Balenciaga, Judith Lieber, and Gucci, such as their green pony hair shoulder bag. This small top handle bag was designed with front-to-back green pony hair, black leather sides, a roll top handle with a detachable short strap, a leather interior with three pockets, and a chunky front turn lock, estimated $900-1,200.
For those that fancy vintage fashion, a 1930’s Art Deco beaded dress will make its way to the block with a $600-800 estimate. This black sleeveless dress was created with extensive beadwork on black silk chiffon, has a black satin slip lining, and comes with a metallic fabric belt.
Other notable jewelry pieces include a silver and gold ring and an eye-catching starburst necklace. Estimated $700-900, a Byzantine-style sterling silver and 18k gold ring by Konstantino, donning a central 18k yellow gold Maltese-style cross with inset diamonds. There will also be a 1970s Pal Kepenyes brass starburst necklace estimated $600-800. This piece is designed with a large brass pendant with an attached rotating companion star, suspended from a brass dog bone link chain.
The sale will also feature a nice variety of Mexican silver including examples from Margo de Taxco, William Spratling, and Los Castillo.
